JOB BRIEF/ PURPOSE
A Senior Structural Engineer is required to join a busy and growing consultancy specializing in the design of underground structures.
The candidate will be integral to the delivery of projects, assisting fellow tunnelling and geotechnical design professionals in the delivery of underground structural designs and projects, and mentoring staff in structural engineering design and practice on a daily basis.
To deliver this the candidate should have excellent technical and communication skills, and have a proven track record in delivering design projects.
Underground structural design is uniquely challenging and previous experience of this is not essential.
Substantial support will be available to the successful candidate from both fellow structural engineers and other specialist design professionals based in other group office locations.

RELATIONSHIPS
- Primarily reporting to the London office Lead Principal Engineer and ultimately the Director responsible for UK Civils Projects;
- It is expected that the candidate will liaise closely with all project and office team members as well as Clients as required;
- In addition the successful candidate should develop and build relationships across the group and assist design staff in other office locations when required.
RESPONSIBILITIES
- Manage, deliver and produce civil and structural engineering designs as part of complex, multi-disciplinary projects;
- Checking and appraisal of design solutions;
- Preparation of technical specifications, drawings, reports, calculation packages and calculations;
- Preparation and review of technical notes and engineering guidance;
- Co-operation and collaboration with other design team members;
- Guiding and mentoring staff in structural design principles and methodologies;
- Management of Projects, Clients and junior staff members;
- Liaison with all project team members and senior design staff throughout the group.
KNOWLEDGE
- Chartered Member of the Institution of Structural Engineers, following MEng or MSc in Civil or Structural Engineering;
- Detailed knowledge of the main structural materials (Steel, Concrete, Masonry & Timber);
- Detailed knowledge of the fundamental principles of structural design;
- Knowledge of current Eurocodes preferred;
- Knowledge of London Underground and or Network Rail standards is desirable;
- Knowledge of Bentley ProjectWise desirable.
SKILLS
- Ability to develop and understand design briefs/ scopes;
- Proven report writing skills;
- Proven ability to communicate and operate effectively as part of a team;
- Fully conversant with the fundamental principles of structural design as well structural engineering tools and techniques and their limitations;
- Ability to identify the need to initiate and implement change both on projects and within office practice,
- Ability to define, analyse and prioritize activities aligned to project and office requirements;
- Ability to build effective working relationships, with people at all levels across the organization and externally;
- Excellent spoken and written English;
- A demonstrable desire to work on complex and interesting design problems from first principles is highly desirable.
EXPERIENCE
- Proven experience of Project Delivery;
- Experience of managing/ prioritizing staff time effectively to meet project deadlines;
- Broad experience in the use of structural analysis and design software;
- Minimum of 6 years structural design experience;
- Proven experience of mentoring and developing junior engineers;
- Proven experience of providing technical support for the production, coordination and exchange of engineering design data;
- Experience in the use of Bentley ProjectWise and or Microstation, is desirable;
- Experience of rail infrastructure projects specifically London Underground or Network Rail is desirable, but not essent
